Weightlifter Shi Zhiyong of China put up an yet another incredible performance, this time at the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation World Cup in Pattaya, Thailand.
Shi was dominant from beginning to end, setting two new world records in the -73kg (161lbs) weight class for the clean & jerk and total.
Before we get to the video, here were Shi's stats from the IWF World Cup:
If you have not yet seen Shi's world record clean & jerk, check it out for yourself courtesy of Shen Zhen Weightlifting's Instagram page (watch all the way through for the slow motion version):
Shi's name is a common feature of the record books. He currently holds all three world records for the snatch, clean & jerk, and total in the -73kg weight class. His 166kg (366lbs) snatch was just 2kg (4.4lbs) under the current world record he holds at 168kg (370lbs). However, he has snatched even heavier in training.
Shi's successful 198kg (436lbs) clean & jerk in his second attempt surpassed the previous world record he set by 1kg (2.2lbs). The new total world record 363kg (800lbs) is 3kg (6.6lbs) heavier than the previous record Shi set of 360kg (793lbs). And he set those world records at the same event: the 2018 IWF World Championship.
At only 26 years of age, Shi has already set world records ten different times. He competed in his first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016 where he took the gold competing in the 69kg weight class (he also won gold for his 190kg clean & jerk).
We look forward to big things from Shi as focus shifts to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
